Supplier Review: Kickstarter

What is Kickstarter, and why should you care?

Kickstarter is a crowd funding site. This means that people with an idea to produce something can post them up, receive pledges from other people that like the idea, and hopefully gather the money to put their ideas into production.

Why is this useful to miniature hobbyists? Because there are production runs for brand new mini lines on the site! Some a unique one-offs, and some are the beginnings of brand new production lines that will be available long after the Kickstarter session has finished, but getting in early allows you to get them cheaply. Either way, if you’re looking for unique minis for that special project, or even more conversion fodder to produce your own characters, this resource is invaluable!

The image featured at the head of this post is from the latest project I supported (you can see the full campaign and all of the minis it produced here) and the miniatures from it will no doubt make an appearance in some form within my forces in the future!

I would strongly recommend checking out some of the projects running on Kickstarter, and seeing what you can pick up for the same price as a boxed set from Games Workshop! The ability to search the whole of Kickstarter for things you’re interested is extremely useful – searches like this one.

NOTE: Not all projects come to fruition, but if they fail to get funded you don’t get charged your pledge amount. Not all project deliver what they say they will, or in the timescales they think they can, but these cases are very few and far between. As long as you go in with your eyes open to these risks, this is an awesome source of fantastic minis for your collection!

Have fun, and see what awesome stuff you can pick up!
